Have you ever heard the saying ‘if you want something done, give it to a busy person?’ Well, I am here to challenge that saying. You may be able to get some things done, but that busy person will eventually miss something, or the quality won’t be just right. And not to mention that there is less flexibility in a busy person’s schedule. I believe you should give the project to a person who does not suffer from calendar bloat, but rather has enough room on their calendar to breath and create.
This is from personal experience. I’ve worked with team mates who were completely booked from 5am until 9pm and others who were booked from 9am until 5pm. Still others, what I like to call the creatives, are only booked 4 to 6 hours each day. Why? because they know that when an opportunity to collaborate comes to their door – they want to say yes! The other two with the 5 to 9 or even the 9 to 5 schedules have to get back to you, rearrange their schedules, and you have to compromise. But the creative has a fluid schedule and has time to do just what you want, when you want it.
Challenge
Here is my challenge to you this week: Go against the grain – leave room in your calendar for opportunities, creativity, and collaboration. You may be surprised at who knocks on your door.
Um, can I do this next week? I have to schedule it in. Not really! I agree and the holidays this year were a wonderful reminder of how much you can get done when you leave space for creativity. Thanks, Linda, for another mindful post. -Deb
